Roof Embellishments

Roofs are the perfect canvas for displaying decorative ornaments that can make a home’s curb appeal stand out. From the graceful curves of copper crestings to geometric patterns, see how architectural ornaments have transformed from functional details to stunning works of art that elevate iconic skylines.

A Finial

An adornment placed at the end of a roof’s highest point, along the ridge or apex, a finial is often sculpted to depict traditional motifs like animals, birds, and mythical creatures as well as customised designs that convey an owner’s personality or function. Finials have been a feature of roofs for centuries, with examples being found on ancient Greek and Roman structures as well as cathedrals and other Gothic buildings across Europe.

In the modern era, copper finials are commonly used as a finishing touch for roofs, though they can also be added as a design element to complement other features of a home’s exterior, such as an arched entryway or a wrought-iron fence. Finials can be made of any material, but copper is a popular choice due to its durability and resistance to weathering. Modern materials such as fibreglass and plastic also allow for intricate finials to be created without the need for heavy metals that can add weight to a roof and require more extensive upkeep.

A rooftop can be further enhanced with cupolas, which are decorative caps that resemble spires and are often placed on top of roof towers or domes. They come in a wide range of sizes, shapes, and colours to suit any home, from small cottages to imposing mansions. Cupolas are not only a stylish addition to your roof, but they can also help to improve airflow within your home and prevent water from collecting on your roof surface.

A rooftop can also be adorned with gargoyles, which are sculptures that appear as if they are marching outward from the eaves of your roof, usually in a procession and bearing different messages. While many gargoyles were commissioned by religious institutions to serve as moral warnings, some were carved to express pagan beliefs or legends.
